Kutch region is bubbling with economic activities due to various reasons. It has large deposits of various minerals like limestone, bentonite, lignite, mica, etc. which are essential raw materials for various types of industries. Many cement plants are being planned in the Kutch region due to tremendous support by State Govt., large deposits of minerals required for manufacturing cement & better connectivity to other parts of the country. In order to strengthen the existing connectivity, keeping in view the new industrial activities in the Kutch region, railway have announced in their budget speech of 2008-09, the gauge conversion of Bhuj & Naliya and extension of this line further into Kutch region to serve the upcoming cement plants. The port traffic is also likely to go up due to expansion plans of Kandla and Mundra including development of SEZ at Mundra. Keeping in view the immense potential of bulk traffic from port as well as from Kutch region, the project line between Samakhiali to Palanpur needs to be doubled to take care of growth potential and seeing the trend of traffic in this region. Since Palanpur-Gandhidham is a feeder to Western DFC, doubling has to be to DFC standards.
Ministry of Railways(Railway Board) has given its approval for survey for the doubling of Palanpur - Samakhiali section which is 248 km long. WR has been required to carry out survey & funds have been arranged by KRC.
- Making provision of Intermediate Block Stop Signals(IBS) between Samakhiali -Gandhidham section.
